Hansel Sandwiches TV Advertisement

Over the last several years, a series of interesting commercials have been produced for Rebisco, the Republic Biscuit Corporation located in the Philippines. The TV spots use familiar fairytale characters to promote their Hansel Sandwiches (cookies).

The Snow White piece was produced in 2008. Rather than biting into the Witch's apple, Snow is drawn back into the cottage by the aroma of a Hansel cookie.

Video posted by gilbertgeorgegiles.

The production combines live action with animation. For obvious legal reasons, the dwarfs could not be drawn to resemble the Disney characters. Yet, the poison apple as well as the cottage and forest glen do have a strong Disney-esque feel to them.

Taipei Bubble Gum Signage

These photos of a Snow White bubble gum sign were taken in Taipei at the Taiwan Storyland, a quasi-museum and themed food hall that recreates Taiwan of the mid-1960s. The sign probably dates from this era since the rest of the museum does.

Photo copyright WanShan, 2006.

Not sure if it was an actual product or simply art. If the gum was real, it could have been introduced to the island by Americans after WWII. Or it may have been a Taiwanese product made without licensing from Disney.

UK Palmolive Promotional Card

In an earlier post, we admired the vintage Snow White paperdoll cards that Palmolive sponsored in Belgium. Now we see Palmolive had its promotional mojo going in the United Kingdom too. This shop counter-top promo card features the Princess and Dwarfs beside a bar of soap. Snow's speech balloon reads: "FOR A SNOW WHITE COMPLEXION USE PALMOLIVE SOAP."

Card measures approximately 19.5" x 15.5" (50 x 40cm). Probably dates from circa 1938.

The promotion was for soap bars and a Snow White storybook, all for only one shilling. The text at the top of the circle is quite faded but reads:
PALMOLIVE BEAUTY SOAP
3 CAKES OF PALMOLIVE SOAP & A BEAUTIFUL COLOURED STORY BOOK
SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS
FEATURING THE WASHING SONG
THE COMBINATION FOR 1/-

In the lower right-hand corner, we're questioned on our knowledge of the Bluddle-Uddle-Um-Dum lyrics...
"DO YOU KNOW THE WASHING SONG? IT'S IN THE BOOK!"

Snow White "Toy Town" and Seven Dwarfs "Fruit Drops"

The 1938 "Toy Town" campaign (detailed in an earlier post) was the brainchild of marketing wiz Kay Kamen. Toy departments within stores were transformed for the holidays, and Disney products featured prominently on shelves.

This newspaper advertisement for a 5 and 10 store in Ochlochnee, Georgia uses a full-page illustration of Snow White and the Prince, the Seven Dwarfs, Old Witch and forest animals to promote this "in-house" toy extravaganza. The "parade" down the page also includes Donald, Mickey, Goofy and even Santa Claus. Measures 11.5" x 17.5".

Details...

The ad also mentions a 7-roll gift box of Seven Dwarfs Fruit Drops manufactured by Curtiss Candy Company. Each roll wrapper featured an illustration of one of the Dwarfs. Only 10 cents for an entire box, limit one per customer.

Produced for the Book Exchange Colsubsidio in Columbia, these 2012 advertisements carry the tagline, "Come with a story and leave with another." Look closely and you'll see the optical illusion.

1938 Chemm 'Snow White Ring' Advertisement

Collector Rick Payne recently came across this Walgreen Drug Store advertisement found in a Springfield, Missouri newspaper. The ad, dated July 15, 1938, is for a Snow White and Prince Charming "charm ring". It was a free premium for customers who purchased the 14 oz. Chemm health food drink (49¢). Chemm health food drink! That doesn't sound very appetizing. No wonder they had to throw in a free ring.

Image scans courtesy of the Rick Payne collection. Used with permission.
See what Rick has for sale at dadric's attic.

The North American general release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs occurred in February 1938.  So this offer was certainly capitalizing on the massive success that the film was enjoying during this period. Yet, is it an officially licensed Disney brothers promotion? The illustrations of Snow and the Prince sort of resemble the movie characters, but the ad is oddly missing any mention of Walt Disney.

This one requires a bit more research to be sure.

Brazilian Journal Advertisement

With the tag line: "Know the two sides of the story," the Brazilian Novo Jornal used fairytale characters in non-traditional ways to promote their publication in an October 2010 advertising campaign. The result was interesting but a bit off color. Snow White, in her very distinctive Disney dress, shows a side of herself that we don't normally see...

Pizzetta Advertisement and the Missing Dwarf

Think twice before you take the last slice. An unusual Pizzetta ad campaign from 2009 featuring Snow White and the Six Dwarfs. Apparently, the seventh dwarf took "the last slice" and he's no more. Did one of the other dwarfs bump him off because the pizza was gone? It's difficult to say.
